May 4, 2008 :: We Need A Rock and Roll Crystal Ball
If we had one, we would have waited to auction the promotional display that we had of “In Through The Out Door” that we auctioned last year on Ebay. This one had been stored away since our “Rave On Records” store days (Wheaton, Illinois) and we were looking to move some items. It had never been displayed and was very cool. Had we known that Zeppelin would be touring again, we would have held on to it and certainly gotten more than the $960 we got (thanks to a great fan in New York).
Also, we would have found out how to get tickets to see Plant and Allison Krauss at Ravinia this summer. Despite logging on at 5:00 a.m. the morning that tickets went on sale, they were already sold out to “donors”. Makes me long for the days when we would just show up at The Jaguar in St. Charles, Illinois and see bands like The Who, The Police and many others who were on their way up. In fact, you’ve got to hear the story about the Who show–I’ll get back to you on that one.

May 3, 2008 :: How Many LPs Do YOU Have in Your Collection?
Just got back from our county flea market. We go each month to see if anyone has any used vinyl in VG+/VG+ to NM/NM condition or any rare stuff. I’m amazed at what people try to sell! They think because it’s old and it’s vinyl (because they’ve heard of the resurgence) that they can expect to sell worn out, water damaged garbage for $3-$5 a piece.
Anyway, there is one guy (we’ll call “Jack”) that we have bought from quite often because he consistently has great quality stuff. I asked him today where he is getting his stuff (he always seems to have 300 new items that he brings each time). He told me that they are all from a collection–and what a collection!
Jack got a call one day from a woman who knew he bought LP collections (like us) and who said that she wanted to sell some vinyl that her brother had collected. She gave him an address and arranged a day and time to view. When he got to the house, Jack didn’t get an answer when he rang and knocked so he called the woman on his cell. She said that the door was open and he should just go in.
When he did, he couldn’t believe what he saw. From floor to ceiling in each room (besides the bathroom), there were stacks and stacks of LPs. He said there were well over 100,000 items. And he knows because he went through ALL OF IT! The woman’s brother had been a collector all his life, never married and had recently died. So Jack bought THOUSANDS of exceptional quality used titles.
We asked him if we could come to his storage and look things over (after all, music is not his main business so we thought he would want to unload in larger quantity). He said he had that offer several times and he was just as happy to keep dragging boxes to the flea market.
Oh well–it’s Jack’s business!
